★ North by Night ★ by Award Winning Author, Peter Burchard-

Editorial Reviews-

“Traveling with the young officers, the reader meets an almost classical cast of war characters...And they are all real, unstereotyped, as thought plucked straight from the year 1863. Peter Burchard uses historical fact with skill…and excellent book.” -New York Times

“Exciting and well written, with vivid characterizations.” -The Horn Book

Novel set during the American Civil War aimed at younger readers about a young Union prisoner who, along with a buddy, escapes from a Confederate jail in South Carolina and then embarks on a long and difficult trip to return to his home in Connecticut.

The events of this tale begin in July of 1863 on the island of St. Helena. Based on the real-life experiences of Captain V. B. Chamberlain of the Seventh Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, who was dispatched to South Carolina in October 1861 with the mission to take the islands along the coast and build a platform for military operations against the city of Charleston. This historical fiction includes a description of the initial assault on Fort Wagner.

One of the most striking aspects of the book is the author's vivid writing style, which seamlessly transitions between describing the beauty of the natural world and delving into the crimes committed by humans. The historical representations are brilliantly portrayed, adding a positive and authentic vibe to the backdrop of a conflict zone.

Amidst the engrossing historical setting, the depiction of the psychological abuse faced by front-line soldiers and the agony their families endure while awaiting their return deeply moved me.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a thought-provoking and immersive experience.

Wow! I love that Celestar Publications is reintroducing Peter Duncan Burchard's work in a fresh way.
Timothy Bradford, a Lieutenant, is the main protagonist. The setting is South Carolina in 1863, a time when a lot of what we take for granted today was not commonplace. There are some phrases that will expose numerous instances of discrimination.
The author's writing is vivid and skillfully transitions from the natural world to crimes committed by humans. Brilliant historical representations add a positive vibe to a background of a conflict zone. I became upset about the psychological abuse of front-line soldiers while their families waited.
Highly recommended read!
