About

Tae Sung can stand up to the bully who has been harassing his best friend; he simply doesn’t realize it yet.

Middle school is coming to an end, and high school is right around the corner for Tae Sung. Tae Sung’s new life should be an opportunity to start over, but he’ll soon discover, to his dismay, that sometimes our experience follows us even when we try to leave it behind. In this realistic novel, the bully continues to harass his best friend.

The kids at Tae Sung’s school are found torturing a wounded snake and using it as a grisly prop for entertainment. When Tae Sung sees what they’re doing, he immediately shows compassion for the suffering animal.

Tae Sung learns he has the power to connect the energy of living things through him like an electrical conduit. This is the price he pays for his benevolence. Tae Sung shares the same ability with his grandfather, who teaches him to eventually become quite skilled. His goal is to come to the aid of his friend.

Is this skill a boon or a bane?

Will Tae Sung be able to show that bully who’s boss?

At the perfect time, will he be empathetic?

This moving tale for middle schoolers will help kids develop compassion and an appreciation for the value of time spent in nature and with animals, as well as the importance of looking out for those we care about.

The main character, Tae Sung, discovers he has a special gift when he sees his middle school classmates torturing an injured snake with sticks. Once the snake’s eyes lock on Tae Sung’s, he finds he’s able to feel what the snake feels, and his higher self knows he must relieve the snake’s misery.

Later, when Tae Sung tells his wise grandfather about his mystical experience, his grandfather reveals that he, too, possesses the empathic ability to discern what others are feeling and to help them. The grandfather encourages Tae Sung to develop his gift with training lessons taught by his Elder. Tae Sung accepts his grandfather’s offer. Then he finds himself immersed in three different situations whereby he uses his gift to help those who are suffering. In one of his grandfather’s training sessions, he learns to form an energetic loop with other beings who are physically present as well as directly involved in a traumatic situation. Tae Sung proceeds to tune into the victims’ anguish and send energy to help in whatever way needed.

Before learning he has a special gift, Tae Sung thinks of himself as average. But after discovering his gift, he understands it makes him unique, and he realizes the necessity to only use his gift to benefit others.

The theme of this story is in sync with what I believe—we’re all blessed with special gifts to help other beings, making the world a better place in which to live.
