The Wind Faries and Other Tales: Classic Literary Fairy Tales

About
This book, titled “The Wind Fairies and Other Tales,” contains nine different stories. The first story, The Windfairies, was written by Mary De Morgan as a gift to Margaret Burne-Jones’s children were the first to have heard the tales.
There is a certain quaintness and moral purpose to each of the stories. There are hints of the supernatural in “Dumb Othmar,” with Hulda’s hallucinatory search for her lover’s lost voice accompanied by a glittering green snake. In contrast, the protagonist of “Vain Kesta” prioritizes material gain over romantic attachment.
In the early 19th century, when many people were fighting for civil rights and social justice, each story is set in a different time and place. Written with purpose, Mary De Moran started out telling stories to the children of her friends, and eventually published three collections of fairy tales: On a Pincushion and Other Tales (1877), The Necklace of Princess Fiorimonde (1880), and The Windfaires (1890). (1900).
Nine of her most renowned stories, included in this book:
- THE WINDFAIRIES
- VAIN KESTA
- THE POOL AND THE TREE
- NANINA’S SHEEP
- THE GYPSY’S CUP
- THE STORY OF A CAT
- DUMB OTHMAR
